The year of 2019 showed impressive progress for The Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act of 2019 (ARBAN). About a year ago, the bill was introduced. All that remains is for the U.S. House to pass ARBAN, setting the stage for it to go to the Senate where it is expected to continue with bipartisan support.
On World Cancer Day in February of this year, the ADAO released a letter signed by nearly forty leading scientists in support of ARBAN. Scientists, teachers, and government officials aim to combat the public health threat of asbestos.
Strong experts have joined the fight over the past year. On October 15, two former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrators, Gina McCarthy, and William K. Reilly, wrote an op-ed in The New York Times expressing their support for ARBAN.
ARBAN would amend the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). TSCA is a United States law, passed by Congress in 1976 and administered by the EPA. TSCA addresses the production, importation, use, and disposal of specific chemicals including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), asbestos, radon, and lead-based paint.
