Recently, real estate renovators in Texas were cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for exposing workers to asbestos at a San Antonio worksite.
Construction workers are just one of several different types of workers at risk for asbestos exposure on the job. Exposure is likely to happen at construction sites because asbestos was used in an array of different building materials throughout the twentieth century.
Workers are most at risk when working at sites with commercial and residential structures built before 1990. This particular violation took place at a residential apartment construction worksite.
Three employers were fined a combined total of $112,000. Do you think the total is enough? Asbestos exposure can lead to serious and fatal conditions, such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. While the employers pay a fine and move on with their lives, the workers’ health may be stuck with an asbestos-related disease for the rest of their lives.
