Despite the efforts of the victims of asbestos exposure, the FACT (Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency) Act of 2015 (H.R. 526) passed the House Judiciary Committee with a 19-9 vote. The bill, which is backed by Republicans and supported by the asbestos industry, will make it more difficult for asbestos victims to obtain the compensation that asbestos companies and trusts owe to them.
The FACT Act of 2015 will also put the privacy of victims at risk, requiring them to publicly provide personal and medical information on a public database. Ultimately, the bill works against victims who have suffered from exposure and asbestos-related diseases, and for the companies that caused that suffering.
If you are an asbestos victim or the family member or friend of a victim, your voice is needed now, more than ever.
In a recent report, it was found that between 12,000 and 15,000 people die per year in the United States due to asbestos exposure. Instead of working to save lives and ban asbestos, our politicians are supporting the asbestos industry.
