Two Electricians Awarded $25 Million in Asbestos Trial

Despite asbestos companies’ denial that their products could cause serious harm within the human body in the past, many judges today are finding them guilty of knowingly allowing workers to handle a substance that would later lead to debilitating diseases like mesothelioma. Recently, a New York jury awarded plaintiffs a $25 million verdict against Crane Company for the past pain and suffering of two electricians and mesothelioma victims.

Selwyn A. Hackshaw and Ivan Sweberg were exposed to asbestos as electricians between the years 1957 and 1972. Both men were diagnosed with mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos on the job for a number of years.

Although numerous other defendants were named, they reached settlements with the plaintiffs before trial. Crane Company was the only defendant at the trial, and their percentage of liability could increase after the jury found that the company “acted with reckless disregard for the safety of others in each case.”

It was found that Hackshaw and Sweberg were exposed to asbestos products used in connection with Crane’s valves, as well as products sold by Crane. The jury also found that Crane failed in their “duty to warn” their workers of the hazards of asbestos.
