Leading Public Health Advocates Form the Committee to Ban Asbestos in America

On June 4, 2008, United States public health advocates from the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) and the John McNamara Foundation launched the Committee to Ban Asbestos in America (CBAA). The ADAO and CBAA are dedicated to preventing asbestos exposure and eliminating asbestos–related diseases. Exposure to asbestos causes diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. In America, 10,000 children, women and men die from asbestos–related diseases every year, an average of almost 30 deaths a day. More than 2,500 of those deaths are from mesothelioma, a rare cancer linked almost exclusively to asbestos exposure. Linda Reinstein, Chairperson of the Committee to Ban Asbestos in America stated, “We are calling on the U.S. Congress and the President to do the right thing and ban asbestos in America and fund critical medical programs. Doctors and scientists agree: asbestos is a carcinogen and that there is no safe level of exposure. Preventing asbestos exposure is the only way to eliminate asbestos caused diseases. Recent ADAO product testing confirmed asbestos is still found in consumer products including toys.” For further information, please see the CBAA’s press release.
