Asbestos Found in Topsoil at Stonehenge

Asbestos can be found in many places. Your home, your child's school, and public buildings are just some locations the hazardous substance has been found. Asbestos contamination can be even present at famous tourist sites, including Stonehenge.

Recently, it was discovered that asbestos-contaminated topsoil was dumped at the Stonehenge location by contractors. The top soil was going to be used to cover a stretch of road to be replaced with grass.

Lumps of asbestos - some the size of bricks -- were found to be present and the topsoil was quickly removed by the contractors in the middle of the night, when no visitors were present. A spokesperson for the project said that the amount of asbestos dumped at the site was small and did not pose harm to visitors.

The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration states that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure. Exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to debilitating and deadly diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. If you fear you have been exposed to asbestos in a public place, do not hesitate to alert your doctor. They will be able to more accurately monitor your respiratory health if an asbestos-related disease evolves.
