Several brands of children's crayons and toy fingerprint test kits have been found to contain asbestos. The real tragedy is that none of these products have been recalled from store shelves or online retailers.
Four different brands of crayons and two different toy crime lab kits, all imported from China, tested positive for tremolite or chrysotile asbestos in recent testing by the Scientific Analytical Institute of Greensboro, N.C. The crayons were purchased in the Bay Area of California, while the crime lab kits were purchased through online retailers.
Companies selling the products, including Toys "R" Us and Dollar Tree Inc., have yet to pull the asbestos-containing products from store shelves. Some state they will contact the foreign manufacturers, but is that enough to protect U.S. children?
It is appalling to see children's toys contaminated with asbestos continue to be sold to the public. The carcinogen can lead to deadly diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer, and children are particularly susceptible to developing an asbestos-related illness after exposure occurs.
