Asbestos Products: Cigarette Filters

Are you giving up smoking tobacco in 2015? We hope so! Smoking tobacco has been known to be dangerous to human health since the 1950's. Over the years, the laws and regulations on cigarettes and cigarette marketing have increased, but not before substantial damage was done to countless American lungs.

From 1952 to 1956, Lorillard Tobacco Company included asbestos in their Kent Micronite filters. Smokers who inhaled tobacco smoke through these filters were directly exposed to asbestos, increasing their risk for lung cancer dramatically. Not only are these smokers at risk for a lung cancer diagnosis today; asbestosis, mesothelioma, and other respiratory diseases associated with asbestos exposure are likely to develop years or decades after initial exposure

The Micronite filters were so dangerous because of the synergistic relationship nicotine and asbestos have together. If you inhale both of these substances, you run a greater risk of disease than if you were exposed to either substance alone.

Asbestos Network encourages you to quit the tobacco habit as one of your 2015 New Years resolutions. Smokers with no existing lung damage from smoking or asbestos exposure who quit smoking by age 50 can cut risk of death in the next 15 years by 50%. Find out more here.
